How much a student year in Slovakia costs: expense calculator
Pick a city and housing type, tick the expense items — the calculator shows a range per month, per academic year and one-off costs at admission. Study at public universities in Slovak is tuition-free, so we count only living costs and fees.
How we counted and what is not included
All amounts are '2026 estimate' ranges from open sources: dormitory websites, rental listings, transport and insurance tariffs. A year is counted as 10 months of study; in summer many students go home or work. Not included: English-taught programmes (paid, fees set by faculties), the price of our support, Slovak courses.

By law, proof of funds is not required for a study residence permit, but the consulate may ask for a bank statement — the reference is 12 × the subsistence minimum (3,543 €); the amount changes, so check the current figure with your coordinator.

Is study really free of charge?
At public universities, full-time in Slovak — yes, tuition is free for international students. The application fee and English-taught programmes may be paid.
Can I live on 400 € a month?
In a dormitory outside Bratislava — realistic: a place 70–140 €, food 150–250 €, transport and phone another 20–40 €. In Bratislava with a room in a flat the budget is closer to 500–600 €.
