University dormitories: prices and conditions

Public universities run their own dormitories (študentský domov, internát) — the cheapest housing in the country. Typically these are rooms for two or three students with a shared kitchen on the floor, or a block layout (two rooms plus a bathroom). The price depends on the building and how recently it was renovated: refurbished blocks cost 1.5–2 times more than the older wings.

How an international student gets a dormitory place

  1. Apply as soon as you are admitted

Places are allocated over the summer (usually June to August) through the university's online system. A first-year student applies by the date given in the admission letter or on the dormitory website. Miss it and you are on the waiting list.
  2. How places are allocated

Distance from home to the university (which works in favour of international students), academic results, social criteria. Some universities have quotas for first-year international students, others do not — there places are scarce and first-years rent privately until the second semester.
  3. Confirmation and payment

Once a place is allocated you confirm it in the system and pay the first month or deposit within the deadline (usually a few days). Otherwise the place goes to the next applicant.
  4. Moving in

Late August to September; bring your passport, residence card or proof of application, and a photo. The contract runs for the academic year.
For the residence permit
The dormitory confirmation (potvrdenie o ubytovaní) is the simplest proof of accommodation for a temporary residence application. We request it from the university as soon as the place is confirmed.

Private residences and rented flats: if there is no dormitory place

Private student residences

Bratislava has several private residences (studios and places in shared blocks): all-inclusive, contract by semester or year, roughly €350–600 a month. More expensive than a dormitory, but there is no allocation lottery — you can book from home in advance.

A room in a shared flat

The most common option for those who miss out on a dormitory: €250–400 in Bratislava, €200–320 in Košice plus utilities. Found through listing portals and student groups; the deposit is usually one month.

A one-bedroom flat

€550–800 in Bratislava, €400–600 in Košice. For the residence permit you will need the rental contract and a notarised consent from the owner — warn the landlord early, not all of them are willing.

Sharing a flat

Two or three students rent a flat and split the costs: financially close to a dormitory, with more freedom and more responsibility.

Bratislava or Košice: where living is cheaper

Bratislava is the capital, with the widest choice of universities, internships and part-time work — and the most expensive housing in the country: rents run 30–40 % above Košice. Košice is the second city, home to TUKE, UPJŠ and UVLF; there are more dormitory places relative to student numbers, and a room costs €100–150 less. Nitra, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Trnava are cheaper still for housing and food, and they have strong faculties (UKF, UNIZA, UMB, UNIPO, UCM). Choosing the city is part of choosing the university: we discuss it at the consultation, not after you are admitted.

Where students actually save

  • ISIC / student card — discounts on transport (the student pass costs a fraction of the standard one), rail travel, museums and software.
  • University canteens — lunch for €3–5 at the student rate.
  • Part-time work — a student with a residence permit may work up to 20 hours a week without a permit; typical rates are €5–8 net per hour in hospitality and warehousing (indicative).
  • Scholarships — merit-based and social scholarships at public universities; some faculties run separate programmes for international students, so ask them directly.
  • A regional university instead of the capital — €100–200 a month saved on housing for the same degree.

FAQ

How much money does a student need per month in Slovakia?

With a dormitory place — roughly €400–650 in Bratislava and €350–550 in Košice and the regional cities: housing €70–180, food €150–300, transport €8–25, insurance €30–70, plus phone and personal spending. Renting a room adds €100–250. For an exact budget for your city and type of housing, use the cost of study calculator.

How much does a dormitory in Bratislava cost?

As a 2026 guide: Comenius University's Mlyny campus runs from about €72 in the older blocks to about €150 in renovated ones, Družba from about €115, and STU dormitories are roughly €89–169 a month depending on the building. Price lists are revised before September — check them on the dormitory websites.

Do international students get a dormitory place in the first year?

It depends on the university. Some have a quota for first-year international students; at the most popular faculties in Bratislava places run out and first-years wait for the second semester or a year. We know in advance where things stand and plan housing before you apply — sometimes that is an argument for a different university or city.

Can I get a residence permit without living in a dormitory?

Yes. A rental contract with a notarised consent from the owner, a private residence confirmation or a dormitory confirmation all work for temporary residence. A booking screenshot will not be accepted. Agree the notary step with the landlord in advance.

Is Slovakia cheaper than the Czech Republic for a student?

Housing and food in Bratislava are comparable to Brno and cheaper than Prague; Košice and the Slovak regional cities are cheaper than most Czech student cities. Tuition-free study in Slovak also removes the biggest line from the budget, which is what usually decides the comparison.

Can I cover my costs by working?

A student with a residence permit may work up to 20 hours a week without a work permit — enough to cover food and transport, but do not plan on part-time work as your main source of income: you still have to prove funds on your account when you apply for the residence permit.
